The story of Taskforce Argos.

How the Queensland Police ended up running one of the largest pedophile sites. Obvious content warning for descriptions of child sexual abuse and the people who perpetrate it.

Incidentally, this is the article you send to people who cheer any time internet vigilantes pat themselves on the back for “taking down” CSA websites because “the police aren’t doing anything”. Because, no dipshits, the police are doing something, and that something is using these sites are honeypots to try and identify and arrest the actual people behind them. DDoSing something off the internet does exactly jack shit squat other than maybe messing up an ongoing investigation; the shitsticks behind the site are just going to move elsewhere, and the people trying to catch them will have to start their investigation from scratch. I mean, talk what shit you like about cops when it comes to things like racist incarcerations and shootings and whatnot, but the one thing even racist asshole cops tend to be pretty down on is the commercialized sexual exploitation of kids. So, yanno. Let them get on with the freakin’ job, just this once.

For what it’s worth, I know a bunch of dudes who used to be on taskforces like this one, because they tend to burn out and get “retirement” jobs as IT security managers. A more haunted bunch of people you have never met in your life. It’s awful work, but they do it because, Jesus. Someone has to.
