[M]uch adult fiction is being written for a world that hasn’t existed in twenty years, or fifty. There are no cell phones in that vanished world, no texting, no panopticon. But the young adults of today don’t respond to that world; they never in lived it. Before they were even born, these inventions had already warped the well-mapped territory of things-that-can-happen-in-a-story.
