The myth of unmoderation.

/The myth of unmoderation.

A mod for the Node.js IRC channel talks about their moderation policy. Of special note is the quote:

Literally every single time I’ve banned someone from the channel for dropping sexually explicit shit, a person I respect has thanked me.

This is Myth of the Frozen Peach. “Free speech”, defined in this instance as “unmoderated chat channels”, is something everyone’s been convinced they “want” but, in reality, very few people actually do. Particularly in a “not in my backyard” sense when it comes to their favourite online (and offline) haunts, and particularly particularly when “free speech” intersects with the harm principle…

(Of course, the original principles of freedom of speech have literally fuck-all to do with whether or not you’re allowed to say gross and bigoted shit in private spaces like IRC chat channels. But… whatever.)
