The Internet: public utility?

/The Internet: public utility?

True story: the guy in the cube next to me at the Day Job recently moved into a new place. He discovered he can’t get the internet–at all–because, according to Telstra, there are, “no ports on the RIM“. The “waiting period” for getting a port freed up?1 Up to a year. That means no internet. For up to a year.

I told him we’d full-on legit find a new house.

A year, man. Fuck. Me.

  1. The implication here, if you haven’t caught it, is that there are less connections provisioned for the suburb than there are houses in the suburb. What “freed up” means is that someone else moves out, has their telephone disconnected, co-worker gets plugged in, and the cycle continues again for whomever just moved into the neighbourhood. Yeah. Internet is Australia is fucked. Up. ^
