The history of colours.

/The history of colours.

Actually the history of certain pigments used in art.

We take colour for granted nowadays, but historically whole hues and shades have been unavailable to artists and textile manufacturers due to the scientific processes for creating those pigments not being invented yet, or the raw materials to do so being unavailable in a particular region. This is, in part, why some art from some regions and times looks so drab to us, but also why bright colours that look garish have been fashionable in places we’d now think of as unlikely (think ancient Greek statues).

(And, of course, none of this is even going into the fact that the names we have for colours change over time and with culture.)
