So in 1929, economist John Maynard Keynes1 posited that by 2030 we would only be working “15-hour weeks, with five-day weekends”.

Well. The way things are going, that doesn’t seem to be in any danger of happening. So… why not?

Spoiler alert: work is a trap that keeps the majority of citizens docile and unwilling to participate in the broader polity.

  1. He was the “‘free market’ needs government intervention to function correctly” guy, whose economic policies fell out of favor in the 1970s in ways that, ironically, kinda proved he was correct. ^
