The case for normalization.

/The case for normalization.

Interesting counter-argument to the idea that Trump and his administration shouldn’t be normalized. Essentially, the idea is that continuing to report on the outlandish, offensive, and unprecedented aspects of autocratic populists only allows them to continue to run on populist platforms; the article specifically highlights Silvio Berlusconi as precedent. Meanwhile, forcing the populist leader to play “humdrum politics”–to actually speak about policy platforms and refuse to engage in cult-of-personality shenanigans–serves to specifically reveal just how unfit for leadership they are.

I’ve gotta be honest: I’m not entirely convinced on this argument. But… it’s interesting to contemplate, and definitely worth remembering in parts if not in whole (i.e. don’t normalize the abuses of government, but also do the boring political analysis work).
