Strangling ideas. The Oxygen of AmplificationNew Data & Society report recommends editorial “better practices” for reporting on online bigots and manipulators; interviews journalists on accidental amplification of extreme agendasA long, in-depth look (three reports plus an executive summary!) at how extremists hijacked the media into promoting their views, circa 2016-1018. At its worst, in a search for increasingly elusive revenue, outlets could become thinly-veiled mouthpieces for extremists that provide them with a veneer of journalistic respectability. alisx 3rd March, 2019 at 2:15 am There’s a whole argument in here about whether or not journalism (or, in fact, anything) can even be “bias free”—an argument I’ve had with my journalist friends, even!—or whether that’s even desirable. But I also do think there’s a line between “News Outlet has a known X-leaning bias” and “News Outlet is aggressively promoting Extreme View Y as part of a ‘both sides’ narrative”. It’s the latter that seems to be the thing that’s actively the problem. Like, be biased. Whatever. But being biased while not realizing it is where things start to fall apart… lj_writes 3rd March, 2019 at 2:25 am That reminds me of this article about the future of journalism (yeah, another one in the pile…) arguing that so-called press neutrality is a product of advertising-supported media and that, as media moves toward directly monetizing its user base, we are going to see more partisanship and less pretense of neutrality in news media. Arguably major outlets have been going this direction for years and it’s not necessarily a bad thing other than their hypocrtical pretenses otherwise–“fair and balanced” my ass. Comments are closed.
