Should authors review the books of other authors?

/Should authors review the books of other authors?

Discussion over at Jim C. Hines’ blog.

I do sort of review books, but I have some rules about it, most of which can be summed up as “be positive”. I will happily squee about stuff I think is great or interesting or hits me right in my reading id. But I don’t generally think (with a few notable exceptions, coughIlluminatus!cough) that every single book I read requires a detailed breakdown of all my thoughts on it, particularly if those thoughts are about why it sucks. Although, generally I, yanno. Just try not to read books I don’t like. My reading pile is stacked high enough with books I do want to read to worry about reviewing books I don’t.
