Interesting look at the commodification of teen girls, in this case their raw “fandom enthusiasm”.

It’s not really a secret (to marketers) that the teenage girl demographic is what makes something big, whether it’s The Beatles or Harry Potter or One Direction or Star Trek. (I’d even argue that the current dominance of Marvel’s MCU over equivalent films from DC is because the former company is much, much, much better at tapping into the fannish enthusiasm of teen girls and young women.) Teen girls make culture, and there are a lot of interests vested in ensuring they don’t realise exactly how much power they hold…
