Outsourcing the slush pile.

/Outsourcing the slush pile.

I remember having a conversation a while back with my then-not-yet agent about the idea of using self-pub as a sort of “crowdsourced slush pile”. Of course, this being the internet and all, a comment said in jest becomes an article on Writer Beware not long after.

There’s definitely a bandwagon to be jumped on here. But… I’m not sure this is it.

Good thought. So you did not go down that route at all?

You mean self-pub? No need; I got my agent the old fashioned way (i.e. cold queries through her slush pile).

Picking cream off the indie bestseller lists is good for agents/publishers, but it’s like saying lotto wins are good for yacht salesmen. Not helpful to all the thousands of people who didn’t get the big prizes, in other words.

Fabulous comparison, especially the one with the yacht salesmen!
