I admit I’m a chronic social situation phone-checker, right up to the point where I will just check out of dinner conversations for ten or fifteen minutes because I’m absorbed in something on the screen. Partly this is because I’m very introverted, and constant face-to-face contact–even with people I’m close to, up to and including immediate family members–is draining/stressful, but also partly because like 90% of my social (and now a growing chunk of my professional) life exists online.

Luckily for me, most of my close friends do the same. So it’s not uncommon to see four or five of us clustered around a table in a restaurant, all paying attention to our phones rather than each other.
