The headline says it all.

And this is the truth of it, the truth of Reddit and of Twitter, of Facebook and of 4chan. It’s got nothing whatsoever to do with “free speech” or some pure-hearted ideological pursuit of an online Galt’s Gulch. It’s about making money. It’s about lining the pockets of a clone army of mostly-white,1 mostly-straight, mostly-male startup founders. And if there’s one thing that’s always, without fail, served to line men’s pockets it’s the exploitation of women (and of people of colour, for that matter).

I used to have a Reddit account. I used to use it, even, and have had a non-zero number of productive–even, dare I say it, feminist–discussions on the site. (About videogames, even. Yes, I had thoughtful feminist discussions about videogames with men on Reddit. #notallredditors, indeed.)

I deleted my account a year or so ago, around the time of creepshots and all that business. Despite the rhetoric, the provisioning of a platform for “communities” like creepshots and TheFappening is not a “neutral” act. And any organisation that would like to pretend that it is is not an organisation that is worthy of my clicks and my participation.

  1. Yes, I know. Hence the “mostly” in this case in particular. []
