Interesting look at the rise of the (super-unscientific) myth of the “alpha male“.
My favourite part is where it mentions a review of social science studies on female attraction. The take-home is that while women do tend to find “dominant” men attractive, it’s only in circumstances where that dominance is achieved through pro-social means. In other words, women favour men who achieve “dominance” through kindness and competence, and strongly disfavour those who achieve it via violence and selfishness. (Which, let’s be honest here; is not a preference reserved solely for women.)
In other other words, a “true” “alpha male”–in as much as something exists at all–is just a nice guy who’s good at something.
