Class warfare.

/Class warfare.

So Donald Maass’ post on author “classes” is a few months old by now, but holy hell did it cause a shitstorm when it was fresh.

The funny thing is, though, that very little of the objections seemed to be about the substantive content. Almost all of them objected to the language: comparing successful self-published authors to cattle waiting to be “culled”; describing a hierarchy of authors in the language of travel classes; calling the mid-list a “burden”.

Maass’ post is polarising, but I don’t necessarily see that it’s wrong, per se. Author class warfare isn’t coming.

It’s well-and-truly already here.
