Film Crit Hulk did not like Birdman.

Asides from the fact that I really need some kind of permanent .Article-content p { text-transform: lowercase; } script for this site, this is a weird review for me to read because I both… kinda love and hate it at the same time? For the record, I really liked Birdman, but I don’t think it’s a perfect film and in particular the “single-shot” gimmick didn’t work for me.1

“Of course I like Birdman,” I told someone recently, after he expressed surprise at my opinion. “I make art for commercial–and critical–consumption. Anyone who makes art for commercial/critical consumption is obligated by law to like Birdman. It’s basically just a three hour fuck-you to critics and audiences.”

Critics, audiences, and superheroes, in fact. Y’know. Like Film Crit Hulk, the ur-embodiment of all three.

See Exhibit 284 in “not all art is made for all people”, I guess.

  1. Which is sort of expected. I kinda loathe intrusive cinematography a lot, which is one of the reasons I find Kubrick impossible to watch. That and the fact he can make even the best actors sound like they’re performing in a pretentious, stilted high school play. []
