Amazon versus monster porn.

/Amazon versus monster porn.

A surprisingly thoughtful and non-judgmental article from Business Insider on the “cryptozoological erotica” phenomena. It includes such insights as acknowledging that a large number of authors in this genre are women, as well as a discussion on consent (specifically on the part of the monsters, less so the targets of their rapacious lusts).

The fact that there’s Big Money in monster porn shouldn’t surprise anyone who grew up knowing the meaning of the word “hentai” (even before anime became mainstream, pretty much every video store here had at least one battered copy of Urotsukidōji hidden away somewhere). Or anyone who’s ever studied classical art, for that matter (we even had that Rubens painting up as a poster on the wall in our Italian classroom at high school!).

But I guess an erotic tradition having a long and established history never stopped a good moral panic…
