My brother and I share some passwords, so, like, if I die before him and Facebook still exists, the RL friends will get to know about it. How much they care is another story.

But yeah. Quite a few guildies trust me with their account passwords. When they need my help with stuff again, they’d say, “Forgot already? The same password I gave you last time!” Uh… I know I’m trustworthy and game stuff aren’t worth a lot, but should they trust me that much? If someone else hacks them, can they be sure they won’t blame me?

It’s all about me, duh.

Yeah, and I think it’s worth noting that there are some extremely large fandoms which are based on out-of-copyright material or derivations thereon, like the various Arthurian or Sherlock Holmes fandoms, or Romance of the Three Kingdoms, or, hell, Bible fandom.
What bugs me more about this article is the terrible economics, which I may make a post about myself.

Oh, I didn’t mean there was something wrong with it – I more just meant that even if people weren’t getting paid, people would still be creating all those things!

OMG, lol. I was trying so hard to think up a title like that for the post, but all I could come up with at the time was “Godzilla versus Amercian-90s-Godzilla” and it didn’t quite have the right… punchiness to it.

One of the other interesting things about fan culture is that it’s not as beholden to the culture industry as it seems. I mean, sure a lot of big fandoms are by-products of it… but then you get something like Homestuck which both has a massive fandom and is entirely divorced from the usual sources of production.

Not to mention that, if the culture industry shut down tomorrow, none of the fandoms would go away: People write in fandoms that haven’t had new source material for hundreds (or thousands) of years!

That’s the beauty of remix culture; the author really is dead, if only because now everyone is the author…

I’m pretty heavily engaged in fandom, but the thing is we make our own culture. It’s coming from “culture industry” seeds, but industry culture fails to fully satisfy, and we keep making things over in our own image. So if Hollywood, commercial radio, and most of the big publishing houses went down tomorrow, we’d still have the AO3, Dreamwidth, etc. Fan culture would make more things.
I read stuff in fandoms that I know I’ll never watch, but hey, there’s porn and the writing’s good.
